Caring for an Epoxy Garage Floor
An epoxy floor is built to handle a lot, but how it is cleaned and used day to day still makes a real difference to how long the finish stays looking new. A few simple habits go a long way, and a few common mistakes wear it out faster than the traffic itself does.
Sweep and mop rather than scrub
Regular sweeping to keep grit off the floor prevents the fine scratching that dulls an epoxy finish over time, since loose dirt and sand act like sandpaper under foot and tyre traffic. A mop with warm water and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner is usually enough for the rest. Harsh degreasers and abrasive scrubbing pads are the two things most likely to dull the finish faster than normal wear would.
Deal with spills before they sit
Epoxy resists chemicals well, but oil, fuel and coolant left to sit for extended periods can still leave a mark, particularly on a floor that sees regular vehicle traffic. Wiping a spill up when it happens rather than leaving it for the next clean is the simple habit that prevents most of the staining people eventually notice.
Protect it from what actually causes damage
Most of the wear an epoxy floor picks up comes from a small number of avoidable things: dragging heavy tools or equipment across the surface instead of lifting them, jack stands and equipment resting directly on the floor with no protection underneath, and hot tyres from a vehicle parked straight after a long drive. A rubber mat under a work area or a parking spot goes a long way.
When it is time for a recoat
A well maintained epoxy floor holds its finish for a long time, but high traffic areas usually show wear first, as a dulling or thinning of the gloss rather than any sudden failure. Once that starts showing in one area, it is worth having the floor assessed rather than waiting for it to spread, since a targeted recoat is a smaller job than resurfacing the whole floor once it has worn through in multiple spots.
